About Syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It progresses through stages — primary (a painless sore), secondary (rash and flu-like symptoms), latent (no symptoms), and tertiary (serious organ damage). Many people have no obvious symptoms in the early stages, which is why testing is important after potential exposure.

What This Test Measures

This blood test detects two types of antibodies your immune system produces in response to syphilis infection:

  • IgM antibodies — appear early in infection (typically within 2–4 weeks of exposure) and indicate a recent or active infection
  • IgG antibodies — appear later (4–6 weeks after exposure) and remain detectable for life, indicating either a current or past infection

Combining both gives a more complete picture of whether infection is current, past, or recent.

Window Period

Syphilis antibodies typically become detectable 3–6 weeks after exposure. For the most reliable result after a known exposure, wait at least 6 weeks before testing. Earlier testing may miss recent infections.

Who Should Consider This Test

  • Anyone after suspected exposure to syphilis
  • People with a new or multiple sexual partners
  • Anyone with unexplained sores, rash, or flu-like symptoms after recent sexual contact
  • Routine sexual health screening
  • Pregnant women (syphilis can be transmitted to the baby)

What If I Test Positive?

A positive result indicates exposure to syphilis at some point. You should contact your GP or a sexual health clinic for confirmation testing and treatment. Syphilis is highly treatable with antibiotics, especially in early stages. Untreated syphilis can cause serious long-term complications affecting the heart, brain, and other organs. Recent sexual partners should also be tested.

No Fasting Required: This test does not require fasting. Window Period — Important: Syphilis antibodies typically take 3–6 weeks to develop after exposure. For the most reliable result, wait at least 6 weeks after suspected exposure before testing. Earlier testing may produce a false-negative result. Sample Collection: Follow the finger-prick kit instructions carefully. Ensure your hands are warm and well-hydrated before collection — running warm water over your hands and lowering them below heart level helps blood flow. Sample Return: Return your sample the same day as collection where possible. Avoid posting on a Friday or before a bank holiday. After a Positive Result: A positive antibody result requires confirmation and treatment from a GP or sexual health clinic. Recent sexual partners should also be tested. Syphilis is highly treatable, particularly in early stages.
