About HPV

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK. Most people will get HPV at some point in their lives, and most infections clear on their own without causing problems. However, persistent infection with certain "high-risk" HPV types can cause cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers, which is why screening matters.

What This Test Detects

This self-swab test detects 19 high-risk HPV DNA subtypes that are most strongly linked to cervical cancer. Two types are reported individually because of their high risk:

  • HPV Type 16 — responsible for approximately 50% of cervical cancers
  • HPV Type 18 — responsible for approximately 20% of cervical cancers

The remaining 17 high-risk types (31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, 26, 53, 73, 82, 69) are reported together as "Other high-risk types detected" or "Not detected."

How the Self-Swab Works

Self-collection at home is comfortable, private, and provides results comparable to clinician-collected samples. Follow the kit instructions carefully — the swab needs to be inserted into the vagina and rotated gently for several seconds to collect cells. No special preparation is required.

Who Should Consider This Test

  • Women aged 25 and over (the age at which NHS cervical screening begins)
  • People who have missed or delayed their NHS cervical screening
  • Anyone wanting more frequent screening between NHS appointments
  • People preferring private at-home testing for comfort or privacy

What If I Test Positive?

A positive result means high-risk HPV DNA has been detected in your sample. This does not mean you have cancer — most HPV infections clear on their own within 1–2 years. It means you should follow up with your GP or a gynaecologist for further evaluation, which typically involves a cervical smear (cytology) and possibly a colposcopy to check for any cell changes. If types 16 or 18 are detected, follow-up is particularly important as these carry the highest cancer risk.

Important Limitations

This test detects HPV but does not detect cervical cell changes directly. A negative result is reassuring but does not replace routine cervical screening. If you are eligible for NHS cervical screening, continue to attend your regular appointments — NHS screening combines HPV testing with cell examination.

No Fasting Required: This test does not require fasting. Timing — Important: Do not collect a sample during your period or in the 24 hours after sexual intercourse, as this may affect results. Wait at least 48 hours after using vaginal medications, lubricants, or douches. Sample Collection: Self-collect the swab following the kit instructions carefully. Insert the swab into the vagina and rotate gently for several seconds to collect cells. The swab does not need to reach the cervix — cells from the vaginal walls provide reliable results. Sample Return: Place the swab in the provided transport tube immediately after collection. Return your sample the same day as collection where possible. Avoid posting on a Friday or before a bank holiday. What This Test Does Not Replace: This HPV test does not replace routine NHS cervical screening, which combines HPV testing with cervical cell examination (cytology). If you are eligible for NHS cervical screening, continue to attend your regular appointments. After a Positive Result: A positive HPV result does not mean you have cancer. Most HPV infections clear on their own within 1–2 years. A positive result means you should follow up with your GP or a gynaecologist for further evaluation, which typically involves a cervical smear and possibly a colposcopy.
