Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a potent androgen hormone derived from testosterone. It is produced when the enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone in various tissues including the prostate, hair follicles, liver, brain, and testes. DHT is approximately five times more powerful than testosterone and plays essential roles in male development and sexual function throughout life.

This test is particularly valuable for individuals experiencing hair loss (male or female pattern baldness), investigating prostate health concerns, assessing symptoms of androgen excess in women (such as hirsutism or acne), or monitoring the effectiveness of 5-alpha reductase inhibitor medications like finasteride or dutasteride. Men with low libido, erectile dysfunction, or other symptoms suggesting hormonal imbalance may also benefit from DHT assessment.

What's covered in the price: You receive a venous blood collection kit and professional laboratory analysis. Because this test requires a venous blood draw, you'll need to arrange collection with a qualified phlebotomist—either at a clinic near you or through your own arrangements. A phlebotomy fee may apply separately. Your results will be ready within 10 working days.

Sample Collection Timing: For the most accurate results, collect your sample in the morning between 7am and 10am when hormone levels are typically at their peak and most stable. Fasting: No fasting is required for this test. You can eat and drink normally before your blood draw. Medications: If you are taking 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride, dutasteride) or testosterone therapy, continue taking them as prescribed unless your doctor advises otherwise. Make sure to inform your healthcare provider about any medications you're taking when discussing your results. About DHT: DHT is responsible for the development of male primary sex characteristics during foetal development and secondary sex characteristics at puberty, including facial hair growth, deepening of the voice, and muscle development. In adulthood, DHT continues to play a role in male sexual function, prostate health, and hair follicle activity. Elevated DHT is associated with male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), while low DHT may affect sexual function and development.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a potent androgen hormone produced when the enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone in various tissues including the prostate, hair follicles, liver, brain, and testes. DHT is approximately five times more powerful than testosterone and binds more strongly to androgen receptors. It plays a crucial role in the development of male primary sex characteristics during foetal development and secondary sex characteristics at puberty, including facial and body hair growth, deepening of the voice, and development of the prostate. Throughout adulthood, DHT continues to influence male sexual function, prostate health, and hair follicle activity. Elevated DHT levels are associated with male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and in women, conditions such as hirsutism and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Low DHT may affect sexual function, libido, and in rare cases, development. Medications like finasteride and dutasteride work by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase to reduce DHT levels. Results outside the normal range should be discussed with your GP or endocrinologist.
