A core protein of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The p24 antigen is detectable in the blood earlier than HIV antibodies, typically within 2–4 weeks of infection, making it a key component of fourth-generation HIV screening tests for early detection.
Antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The presence of these antibodies indicates that the body has been exposed to the virus. This test detects antibodies to both HIV-1 and HIV-2.
This test is for screening and information only — it is not a medical diagnosis or professional advice. Please have your results reviewed by a qualified doctor or healthcare provider who can explain what they mean for your personal health situation. If your results show anything outside the normal range, or if you're worried about your health, see your doctor as soon as you can. Don't change any medications or treatments based on these results alone — always talk to your healthcare provider first.

Frequently asked questions
This fourth-generation test detects both p24 antigen (detectable from approximately 2-4 weeks after exposure) and HIV antibodies (which may take 4-12 weeks to develop). For the most reliable result, BHIVA (British HIV Association) recommends testing at least 45 days after the exposure event. If you test earlier and get a negative result, consider retesting after 45 days to be sure.
Yes, completely. Your HIV test result is sent only to you. It is not reported to your GP, not added to any public health database, and not shared with your employer or insurer. Medi Test Direct is fully GDPR-compliant and your privacy is protected throughout. You choose whether or not to share your result with anyone.
A reactive result on this screening test means HIV antibodies and/or p24 antigen have been detected in your sample. This is a screening result and must be confirmed with a follow-up test at a GP surgery or sexual health clinic. Do not treat a single screening result as a confirmed diagnosis — confirmatory testing (typically a Western blot or additional antigen/antibody test) is always required.
Yes. This is a finger-prick home collection kit. You collect a small blood sample from your fingertip using the lancet provided, place it in the collection tube, and return it to our UKAS-accredited laboratory using the prepaid envelope. No clinic visit is required. Results are typically available within 2-3 working days of the laboratory receiving your sample.
Contact your GP or a sexual health clinic for confirmatory testing. If confirmed, you will be referred to an HIV specialist clinic where treatment can begin promptly. Modern antiretroviral therapy (ART) is highly effective — people diagnosed early and treated can expect a normal life expectancy. Treatment also reduces the risk of transmitting HIV to near zero (undetectable = untransmittable). Sexual partners should also be tested.
