Manganese Blood Test

Detect manganese toxicity from occupational or environmental exposure

🩸 Venous Blood Sample

Why Test for Manganese?

Manganese is an essential trace element needed for bone health, metabolism, and antioxidant function—but too much is toxic. Unlike most nutritional deficiencies, manganese toxicity is far more common than deficiency, particularly among workers exposed to manganese dust or fumes. Chronic overexposure causes "manganism," a serious neurological condition with Parkinson's-like symptoms. Blood testing is the standard method to assess manganese status.

Common Sources of Manganese Exposure

🔧 Welding fumes & grinding
⛏️ Mining & ore processing
🏭 Steel & alloy production
🔋 Battery manufacturing
🎨 Ceramics & glass colouring
🧪 Chemical production
💉 Long-term TPN (IV nutrition)
🚰 Contaminated well water

Symptoms of Manganese Toxicity (Manganism)

🚶 Slowness of movement
🤲 Tremor (often at rest)
🦿 Stiffness & rigidity
⚖️ Balance problems
🧠 Memory & concentration issues
😔 Depression & mood changes
😤 Irritability
😴 Fatigue & weakness

💡 Early symptoms may be subtle and mistaken for stress or aging. Manganism resembles Parkinson's disease but has a different underlying cause. Early detection through testing allows intervention before permanent damage occurs.

👤 Who Should Consider This Test?

🔧 Welders and metal fabricators
⛏️ Miners and smelter workers
🏭 Steel and alloy production workers
🔋 Battery manufacturing employees
💉 Patients on long-term IV nutrition (TPN)
🧠 Anyone with unexplained neurological symptoms
🚰 People with well water concerns
📋 Occupational health monitoring

💡 Welders Take Note: Welding fumes containing manganese are a major occupational hazard. If you weld regularly, periodic manganese testing is advisable—even with good ventilation and PPE. Early detection of elevated levels allows intervention before neurological symptoms develop.

No Fasting Required: You can eat and drink normally before this test.

Timing for Occupational Testing: For workplace monitoring, samples are often collected at the end of the work shift or work week. Follow your occupational health guidelines if applicable.

Sample Collection: This test uses a standard SST (gold top) tube. Blood manganese is the preferred sample type for assessing body manganese status.

Post Sample: Return your sample the same day it's collected using the prepaid envelope provided. Post early in the week (Monday–Wednesday) to avoid weekend delays.

⚠️ Occupational Exposure: If you have significant occupational manganese exposure, your employer should provide regular health surveillance under COSHH regulations. This private test does not replace workplace health monitoring requirements but can supplement it or provide baseline measurements.

ℹ️ Why Blood Testing? Blood (serum) testing is the standard method for assessing manganese status. Blood levels correlate well with body burden and clinical symptoms. Urine testing for manganese is less reliable because only very small amounts are excreted via the kidneys.

Medical Disclaimer

This test is for screening purposes only and does not constitute a medical diagnosis. Results should be reviewed by a qualified healthcare provider who can interpret them in the context of your health history, occupation, symptoms, and exposure sources.

If you have neurological symptoms and elevated manganese levels, please consult your GP or an occupational health physician promptly. Early intervention can prevent progression of manganism.

Sample Collection: Collect a urine sample using the kit provided. Follow the instructions carefully.

No Fasting Required: This test is not affected by food or drink.

Timing: A first-morning urine sample is preferred for the most consistent results.

Sample Return: Post your sample the same day as collection. Avoid posting on Fridays or before bank holidays.
