Why Test for Mercury?

Mercury is a toxic heavy metal that exists in several forms, each with different exposure sources and health effects. Methylmercury (from fish consumption) accumulates in the body and affects the nervous system, while inorganic mercury (from dental amalgams or occupational exposure) primarily affects the kidneys. Chronic mercury exposure can cause neurological damage, tremors, memory problems, and kidney dysfunction. Testing helps identify whether your exposure levels are within safe limits.

Mercury toxicity develops gradually. Symptoms may be subtle at first and worsen over time with continued exposure.

Important — Mercury Exposure vs Sensitivity

Understanding Mercury Forms: Blood testing is better for detecting methylmercury (from fish/seafood), as it circulates in red blood cells. Urine testing is better for detecting inorganic mercury (from dental amalgams, occupational exposure), as this form is excreted by the kidneys. If unsure of your exposure source, blood is generally the first-line test.

You can choose between a blood sample or a urine sample using the selector at the top of this page. Both measure mercury exposure but in slightly different ways.

Choose BLOOD if:

  • You eat fish or seafood frequently (especially large predatory fish)
  • You're unsure of your exposure source

Choose URINE if:

No Fasting Required: You can eat and drink normally before this test. Dietary Note: Mercury can be present in everyday foods. Recent dietary intake may influence urine mercury levels. For the most accurate assessment, maintain your normal diet — your doctor can interpret results in context. For Sensitivity / Allergy Concerns: This test measures systemic mercury levels, not mercury allergy. If you suspect a contact allergy, you'll need a skin patch test from a dermatologist. Sample Collection: Follow the kit instructions carefully. Return your sample using the prepaid envelope on the same day as collection where possible. Avoid posting on a Friday or before a bank holiday.
