Why Test for Arsenic?

Arsenic is a toxic metalloid that occurs naturally in the environment and can contaminate groundwater, soil, and food. Long-term exposure to even low levels of arsenic is linked to serious health conditions including skin changes, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and increased cancer risk. Arsenic exposure often goes unnoticed because it has no taste or smell in water. Testing can identify whether you're being exposed through your drinking water, diet, or environment.

Common Sources of Arsenic Exposure

  • Contaminated well water
  • Rice & rice products
  • Seafood (organic arsenic)
  • Some fruit juices
  • Treated wood (CCA)
  • Industrial exposure
  • Some pesticides & herbicides
  • Some traditional medicines

Effects of Arsenic Exposure

  • Skin changes (darkening, lesions)
  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Muscle cramps
  • Anaemia

Chronic low-level arsenic exposure may cause no obvious symptoms for years. Testing is especially important if you rely on private well water.

Important — Arsenic Exposure vs Sensitivity

Why Urine is Preferred for Arsenic: Arsenic clears from the blood within hours, making blood testing only useful for very recent or ongoing high-level exposure. Urine captures arsenic excreted over 2–3 days and is the preferred sample type for most arsenic screening. Blood testing is mainly used for acute poisoning investigations.

Choose Your Sample Type

You can choose between a blood sample or a urine sample using the selector at the top of this page. Both measure arsenic exposure but in slightly different ways.

Choose BLOOD if:

  • You've had a known acute exposure in the last few hours
  • Your doctor specifically requested blood arsenic
  • You're being investigated for acute arsenic poisoning
  • You need to document recent occupational exposure

Choose URINE if:

  • You want to screen for arsenic exposure (recommended)
  • You're concerned about well water or dietary sources
  • You want the most sensitive test for chronic exposure
  • You prefer home collection without needles
  • Your doctor hasn't specified a sample type

No Fasting Required: You can eat and drink normally before this test. Dietary Note: Arsenic can be present in everyday foods. Recent dietary intake may influence urine arsenic levels. For the most accurate assessment, maintain your normal diet — your doctor can interpret results in context. For Sensitivity / Allergy Concerns: This test measures systemic arsenic levels, not arsenic allergy. If you suspect a contact allergy, you'll need a skin patch test from a dermatologist. Sample Collection: Follow the kit instructions carefully. Return your sample using the prepaid envelope on the same day as collection where possible. Avoid posting on a Friday or before a bank holiday.
