Why Test for Chromium?

Chromium exists in different forms with very different health effects. Trivalent chromium (Cr III) is an essential nutrient involved in glucose metabolism, while hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) is toxic and carcinogenic. The most common reason for chromium testing is monitoring patients with metal-on-metal hip replacements , where cobalt-chromium alloy wear releases both metals into the body. Occupational exposure in welding, electroplating, and leather tanning is another concern.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) from industrial exposure is a known carcinogen. If you have a metal-on-metal hip implant, chromium testing is recommended alongside cobalt.

Important — Chromium Exposure vs Sensitivity

Hip Implant Patients: For metal-on-metal hip replacement monitoring, blood chromium is tested alongside cobalt as recommended by MHRA guidance. Both metals are released from cobalt-chromium alloy implants. Urine chromium may be used for occupational monitoring of hexavalent chromium exposure.

No Fasting Required: You can eat and drink normally before this test. Dietary Note: Chromium can be present in everyday foods. Recent dietary intake may influence urine chromium levels. For the most accurate assessment, maintain your normal diet — your doctor can interpret results in context. For Sensitivity / Allergy Concerns: This test measures systemic chromium levels, not chromium allergy. If you suspect a contact allergy, you'll need a skin patch test from a dermatologist. Sample Collection: Follow the kit instructions carefully. Return your sample using the prepaid envelope on the same day as collection where possible. Avoid posting on a Friday or before a bank holiday.
