The VLDL Cholesterol Blood Test measures very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, a crucial component of your overall cholesterol profile that is often overlooked in standard lipid panels. VLDL is produced by your liver and serves as the primary carrier of triglycerides through your bloodstream to tissues throughout your body. Whilst your body requires some VLDL to transport fats for energy and cellular function, elevated levels are strongly associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk.

This test is particularly valuable for individuals with elevated triglycerides, metabolic syndrome, or diabetes, as VLDL levels are closely linked to triglyceride metabolism. It is also ideal for those with a family history of heart disease who want comprehensive cardiovascular risk evaluation, and anyone taking medications or making lifestyle changes to improve their cholesterol profile.

What's covered in the price: You receive a venous blood collection kit and professional laboratory analysis. Because this test requires a venous blood draw, you'll need to arrange collection with a qualified phlebotomist—either at a clinic near you or through your own arrangements. A phlebotomy fee may apply separately. Your results will be ready within 3 working days.

Fasting Required: For accurate VLDL cholesterol measurement, you should fast for 10–12 hours before your blood sample is collected. During this time, you may drink water but should avoid all food, beverages containing sugar or milk, and alcohol. Fasting ensures that recent food intake does not temporarily elevate your triglyceride and VLDL levels. Sample Timing: Take your sample in the morning after your overnight fast, ideally between 7am and 10am. This timing ensures consistent results and makes the fasting period more manageable. Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours before your test, as alcohol can significantly affect triglyceride and VLDL levels. Medications: If you take cholesterol-lowering medications, consult with your doctor about whether to take them before or after your blood test.

Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol is produced by your liver and carries triglycerides through your bloodstream to tissues around your body. Whilst your body needs some VLDL to transport fats for energy, high levels are associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk, as VLDL contributes to the build-up of fatty deposits in your arteries (atherosclerosis), leading to narrowing and hardening of blood vessels. Normal VLDL levels are typically between 0.2 and 1.0 mmol/L. This test helps build a complete picture of your cholesterol profile and cardiovascular risk, particularly when combined with measurements of LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. Results outside the normal range may need a follow-up with your GP.
