Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common herpes virus that infects most people at some point in their lives, usually without causing symptoms. However, CMV can cause significant health issues in pregnant women (where it may affect the developing baby), newborns, and individuals with weakened immune systems. This test detects both IgG and IgM antibodies to determine your CMV status.

This test is particularly valuable for women planning pregnancy or currently pregnant, individuals with weakened immune systems (such as transplant recipients or those with HIV), healthcare workers, childcare workers, and anyone experiencing symptoms that may be related to CMV infection such as prolonged fatigue, fever, swollen glands, or liver inflammation.

What's covered in the price: You receive a venous blood collection kit and professional laboratory analysis. Because this test requires a venous blood draw, you'll need to arrange collection with a qualified phlebotomist—either at a clinic near you or through your own arrangements. A phlebotomy fee may apply separately. Your results will be ready within 5 working days.

No Fasting Required: There are no fasting requirements for this test. You may eat and drink normally before your blood draw. Supplements: Stop taking biotin supplements or any multivitamins containing biotin at least 48 hours (2 days) before your blood draw. Biotin can interfere with certain laboratory testing methods and affect result accuracy. About CMV Testing: This test measures two types of antibodies. IgM antibodies appear early in infection and suggest a recent or active infection. IgG antibodies develop later and indicate past infection or immunity. Understanding both helps determine whether an infection is new, recent, or occurred in the past.

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against Cytomegalovirus (CMV). The presence of IgG antibodies usually indicates a past infection with CMV and suggests that the individual has developed long-term immunity. These antibodies typically remain detectable for life after infection. This test is crucial for determining prior exposure, which is particularly important for pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals. A positive IgG with negative IgM generally indicates past infection rather than active disease. Results outside the normal range may need a follow-up with your GP.

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies against Cytomegalovirus (CMV). The presence of IgM antibodies typically indicates a recent or acute CMV infection, as these are the first antibodies produced by the immune system in response to a new infection. A positive IgM result, especially in conjunction with a negative IgG result, suggests a primary infection, which requires careful clinical management, particularly in pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals. IgM antibodies usually become undetectable within a few months of infection. Results outside the normal range may need a follow-up with your GP.

Frequently asked questions

CMV is a common virus usually harmless in healthy adults but can be serious during pregnancy (risk of congenital CMV) and in immunocompromised people. Testing shows whether you have current, recent, or past infection.

IgG+/IgM- = past infection, immune. IgG-/IgM- = never infected. IgG+/IgM+ = possible recent infection, needs further investigation. IgG-/IgM+ = possible very early infection, repeat in 2-3 weeks.
