Vitamin B7 (biotin) is a water-soluble B vitamin essential for metabolic function, healthy hair and skin, and nervous system support. It serves as a cofactor for enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis, amino acid metabolism, and gluconeogenesis—the process of producing glucose from non-carbohydrate sources. Biotin plays a crucial role in converting carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy, and is also involved in gene regulation and cell signalling.

This test is particularly valuable for individuals experiencing unexplained hair loss or thinning, brittle nails, skin rashes (particularly around the eyes, nose, mouth, and genital area), chronic fatigue, or neurological symptoms such as depression, lethargy, or numbness and tingling in the extremities. Those consuming raw egg whites regularly, receiving parenteral nutrition, taking certain anticonvulsant medications, or pregnant women may benefit from biotin assessment.

What's covered in the price: You receive a venous blood collection kit and professional laboratory analysis. Because this test requires a venous blood draw, you'll need to arrange collection with a qualified phlebotomist—either at a clinic near you or through your own arrangements. A phlebotomy fee may apply separately. Your results will be ready within 10 working days.

No Fasting Required: There are no fasting requirements for this test. You may eat and drink normally before your blood draw. Supplements: Stop taking biotin supplements or any multivitamins containing biotin at least 72 hours (3 days) before your blood draw. This is essential as biotin can interfere with laboratory testing methods and affect result accuracy. About Vitamin B7: Biotin is found in many foods including eggs (cooked), nuts, seeds, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, spinach, and organ meats. Deficiency is relatively rare but can cause symptoms including hair loss, brittle nails, red scaly rash around the eyes, nose, mouth, and genital area, depression, lethargy, and numbness in the extremities.

Vitamin B7 (biotin), also known as vitamin H or coenzyme R, is a water-soluble B vitamin that functions as a cofactor for enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis, amino acid metabolism, and gluconeogenesis. It plays a crucial role in converting carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy, supporting healthy hair, skin, and nail growth, and maintaining proper nervous system function. Biotin is also involved in gene regulation and cell signalling. Deficiency can cause hair thinning or loss, brittle nails, a red scaly rash particularly around the eyes, nose, mouth, and genital area, neurological symptoms including depression, lethargy, hallucinations, and numbness or tingling in the extremities. Risk factors for deficiency include consumption of raw egg whites (which contain avidin that binds biotin), parenteral nutrition, certain anticonvulsant medications, and pregnancy. Good dietary sources include eggs (cooked), nuts, seeds, organ meats, and certain vegetables. Results outside the normal range may need a follow-up with your GP.
