The Mumps Antibodies (IgG) Blood Test determines whether you have immunity to mumps, a contagious viral infection that primarily affects the salivary glands. This test measures IgG antibodies, which indicate long-term protection from either vaccination (typically the MMR vaccine) or past natural infection.

This test is ideal for healthcare workers, teachers, childcare staff, laboratory personnel, and anyone needing to confirm their mumps immunity for occupational health requirements, university enrolment, or travel purposes. It is also valuable for individuals uncertain about their vaccination history.

No Fasting Required: This test does not require fasting. You may eat and drink normally before your blood collection. Biotin Supplements: If you take biotin (vitamin B7) supplements, stop taking them for at least 48 hours before your blood test. Biotin can interfere with certain laboratory assays and may cause inaccurate results. Recent Vaccination: If you have recently received the MMR vaccine, wait at least 4–6 weeks before testing to allow sufficient time for antibodies to develop. Testing too soon after vaccination may produce a false-negative result. Recent Exposure: If you have been exposed to someone with mumps and are concerned about infection, please contact your GP or NHS 111 promptly. This immunity test is not intended to diagnose active mumps infection.

Mumps IgG antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to mumps virus infection or vaccination. These antibodies indicate long-term immunity to mumps, a contagious viral infection that classically causes painful swelling of the parotid (salivary) glands, giving the characteristic "hamster cheek" appearance. What Positive Means: A positive result indicates you have developed immunity to mumps, either through vaccination (typically the MMR vaccine given in childhood) or past natural infection. You are protected against future mumps infection. This result can be used to document immunity for occupational health, educational, or travel requirements. What Negative Means: A negative result suggests you may not be immune to mumps. This could indicate you were never vaccinated, your vaccination did not produce adequate immunity, or your antibody levels have waned over time. Vaccination is recommended for non-immune individuals, particularly those in high-risk settings such as universities where outbreaks can occur. Why Mumps Immunity Matters: While mumps is often a mild illness, it can cause serious complications. These include viral meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain), encephalitis (brain inflammation), permanent hearing loss, and orchitis (testicular inflammation) in post-pubertal males, which can rarely lead to reduced fertility. Confirmed immunity protects against these potential complications. Equivocal Results: Occasionally, results may be reported as equivocal or borderline, meaning antibody levels are at the threshold of detection. In such cases, repeat testing or vaccination may be recommended depending on your clinical situation and occupational requirements.
