A trained phlebotomist takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm using the vacutainers provided in your kit. The appointment takes around 10 minutes.

Seal your sample in the biohazard bag provided and drop it in any Royal Mail postbox using the prepaid Tracked 24 envelope. Post Monday–Thursday for best results.

No Fasting Required: This test does not require fasting. You may eat and drink normally before your blood collection. Testing After Vaccination: If you are testing to confirm vaccine response after hepatitis A immunisation, allow at least 4 weeks after your most recent dose before testing for accurate antibody levels. Per UK Green Book guidance, the standard hepatitis A vaccine schedule is two doses given 6 to 12 months apart for long-term protection — testing immediately after the first dose may not reflect your final immunity status. Testing After Suspected Exposure: If you are testing because of possible exposure to hepatitis A, antibodies typically take 2 to 6 weeks to develop. If your test is negative shortly after exposure, you may need a repeat test. Recent Travel: If you've recently travelled to an area where hepatitis A is common, mention this to your doctor when reviewing results. Sample Collection: This test requires a venous blood sample collected at one of our partner clinics. Bring photo ID to your appointment.

Hepatitis A is an acute, short-term disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Hepatitis A is commonly transmitted through food or water which has been contaminated by faeces from someone who is already infected by the virus. This type of hepatitis is most common in countries where the sanitation is poor. IgM antibodies are involved in the very early stages of an immune response and first to be made by the body when fighting a new infection, providing short-term protection. A positive IgM result indicates a recent HAV infection. IgG provides antibody-based immunity. IgG antibodies form the basis of long-term protection against microorganisms and in those with a healthy immune system, sufficient IgG antibodies are produced to prevent re-infection. A positive IgG indicates a past HAV infection and immunity to the virus.
