The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) DNA PCR Blood Test directly detects and quantifies EBV genetic material (DNA) in your blood using highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. Unlike antibody tests that indicate past exposure, this test identifies active viral replication and measures the viral load.

This test is particularly valuable for diagnosing active EBV infections, monitoring viral reactivation in immunocompromised individuals (such as transplant recipients), assessing EBV-related conditions, and tracking response to antiviral therapy. It is recommended for those with symptoms of acute infectious mononucleosis or requiring viral load monitoring.

No Fasting Required: This test does not require fasting. You may eat and drink normally before your blood collection. Exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before your test to optimise accuracy. Medications: If you are taking antiviral medications, continue them as prescribed unless advised otherwise by your doctor. Note any current medications when receiving your results. Sample Handling: PCR testing requires careful sample handling. Your kit includes specific instructions for the phlebotomist regarding collection and storage. Please ensure the sample is returned promptly after collection. Clinical Context: Please provide any relevant clinical information, such as transplant status, immunosuppressive therapy, or current symptoms, to help with result interpretation.

This test uses quantitative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to detect and measure the amount of Epstein-Barr virus DNA in your blood. PCR is a highly sensitive molecular technique that can detect very small amounts of viral genetic material, making it the gold standard for identifying active EBV infection and monitoring viral load. What the Test Measures: Results are reported as copies of EBV DNA per millilitre of blood (copies/mL) or International Units per millilitre (IU/mL). A detectable viral load indicates that EBV is actively replicating in your body. The higher the viral load, the more active the infection. What a Detectable Result Means: A detectable EBV DNA viral load indicates active viral replication. This may occur during acute infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever), EBV reactivation in immunocompromised individuals, or EBV-associated diseases such as post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) or certain lymphomas. What an Undetectable Result Means: An undetectable result means EBV DNA was not found at levels above the test's detection threshold. This may indicate no active EBV infection, latent (dormant) infection without active replication, or successful viral suppression with treatment. Note that most adults carry latent EBV without detectable DNA in blood. Clinical Applications: This test is particularly important for transplant recipients and immunocompromised patients, where rising EBV viral loads may indicate risk of EBV-associated complications. Serial monitoring allows early intervention. In immunocompetent individuals, it can help diagnose acute infectious mononucleosis when antibody tests are inconclusive. Difference from Antibody Testing: Unlike antibody tests (which show past exposure and immune response), PCR testing directly detects the virus itself. A person with positive EBV antibodies but undetectable DNA has latent infection; a person with detectable DNA has active viral replication.
