Lipase is an enzyme produced primarily by the pancreas that plays an essential role in breaking down dietary fats into fatty acids and glycerol for absorption in the intestines. When the pancreas is inflamed or damaged, lipase leaks into the bloodstream in elevated amounts, making it a key marker for diagnosing pancreatic conditions such as acute and chronic pancreatitis.

This test is ideal for individuals experiencing unexplained abdominal pain (particularly upper abdominal pain radiating to the back), those with a history of pancreatic conditions, people monitoring pancreatic health after previous episodes of pancreatitis, or anyone wanting to assess pancreatic enzyme function. It's also useful for investigating symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or fatty stools that may suggest pancreatic insufficiency.

What's covered in the price: Your kit contains everything needed to collect a finger-prick blood sample at home. Simply follow the instructions, post your sample using the prepaid envelope, and receive your results within 5 working days.

Important: This test is not suitable for people with acute symptoms of pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, fever). If you have these symptoms, seek urgent medical attention immediately—do not wait for a home test.

Fasting Required: Do not eat or drink anything other than water for 12 hours prior to your test. Eating, especially fatty foods, can affect lipase levels and lead to inaccurate results. Medications: Continue taking your regular medications as prescribed unless your doctor advises otherwise. Some medications can affect lipase levels—inform your healthcare provider about all medications you're taking when discussing your results. Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before testing. Alcohol is a common cause of pancreatitis and can affect lipase levels. Timing: If you're monitoring a known pancreatic condition, try to test at a consistent time to allow meaningful comparison between results. About Lipase: Lipase is produced primarily by the pancreas, though small amounts are also made in the stomach, mouth, and other tissues. In acute pancreatitis, lipase typically rises within 4-8 hours of symptom onset, peaks at 24 hours, and remains elevated for 8-14 days—longer than amylase, making it particularly useful for detecting pancreatitis even if testing is delayed.

Lipase is a digestive enzyme produced primarily by the pancreas that breaks down dietary fats (triglycerides) into fatty acids and glycerol, enabling their absorption in the small intestine. Small amounts of lipase normally circulate in the blood, but when pancreatic cells are damaged or inflamed, significantly increased amounts are released into the bloodstream. Elevated lipase levels are most commonly associated with acute pancreatitis, where levels typically rise to 3-10 times the upper limit of normal. Other causes of elevated lipase include chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, gallbladder disease, bowel obstruction, kidney disease (reduced clearance), and certain medications. Lipase is more specific for pancreatic disease than amylase and remains elevated longer (8-14 days vs 3-5 days), making it the preferred marker for diagnosing pancreatitis. Low lipase levels are less common but may indicate chronic damage to pancreatic cells, cystic fibrosis, or pancreatic insufficiency—conditions where the pancreas cannot produce enough enzymes for proper digestion, leading to symptoms such as fatty stools, weight loss, and nutritional deficiencies. Results outside the normal range should be discussed with your GP for further evaluation.
