This PCR test detects Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae DNA in your urine sample, identifying urethral infections. Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STI in the UK, while gonorrhoea is the second most common. Both can cause discharge and painful urination, but many infections are asymptomatic. Untreated infections can lead to complications including epididymitis in men. Both are easily treated with antibiotics.
Pharyngeal (throat) infections with chlamydia and gonorrhoea are common following oral sex and are almost always asymptomatic—you won't know you have them without testing. Throat infections can be a source of transmission to partners and won't be detected by urine testing alone. This is why multisite testing is recommended for anyone who has had oral sex.
Rectal infections with chlamydia and gonorrhoea are common following receptive anal sex. Symptoms may include rectal discharge, discomfort, or bleeding, but many infections are asymptomatic. Rectal infections can be a source of transmission and won't be detected by urine testing. Certain strains of rectal chlamydia can cause lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), a more serious infection requiring longer antibiotic treatment.
This test is for screening and information only — it is not a medical diagnosis or professional advice. Please have your results reviewed by a qualified doctor or healthcare provider who can explain what they mean for your personal health situation. If your results show anything outside the normal range, or if you're worried about your health, see your doctor as soon as you can. Don't change any medications or treatments based on these results alone — always talk to your healthcare provider first.
