Description

The Anaemia Profile is a comprehensive blood test designed to assess your vitamin B12 and folate levels alongside key blood health markers. This test measures essential components including red and white blood cells, iron stores, inflammatory markers, and vitamin levels, providing a detailed overview of your nutritional and haematological status.

This test is ideal for individuals experiencing symptoms like fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, pale skin, or neurological issues which may be linked to vitamin B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, or anaemia. It also benefits those with dietary restrictions (vegetarians, vegans), absorption problems, or chronic conditions affecting blood health.

What's covered in the price: You receive a venous blood collection kit and professional laboratory analysis of 21 biomarkers across 6 categories. Because this test requires a venous blood draw, you'll need to arrange collection with a qualified phlebotomist—either at a clinic near you or through your own arrangements. A phlebotomy fee may apply separately. Your results will be ready within 2 working days.

Results ready within 2 working days

Your sample goes to a UKAS accredited laboratory meeting ISO 15189 standards.

Action Required: Once your order confirmation arrives, please reply to the email with your date of birth. This helps us process your order quickly and avoid any delays.

Venous Test

This test requires a venous blood sample collected by a trained phlebotomist—it cannot be done with a finger-prick at home. You'll receive a collection kit containing everything the phlebotomist needs.

Your Options:

  • Find a Local Clinic: Contact our support team and we'll help you locate a nearby clinic with qualified staff to perform the blood draw.
  • Make Your Own Arrangements: You're welcome to arrange collection with any qualified phlebotomist or clinic of your choice.

Please Note: The phlebotomy service (blood draw) is not included in the test price. Clinics typically charge £20–£50 for this service. Please confirm the fee when booking your appointment.

No Fasting Required: There are no fasting requirements for this test. You may eat and drink normally before your blood draw.

Medications and Supplements: Avoid taking vitamin B12 or folate supplements for at least 24 hours before your test to prevent interference with results. Continue taking any prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider.

Sample Timing: Blood samples should ideally be taken in the morning. Ensure you are well hydrated before your appointment.

Exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise 24 hours prior to testing as it may affect some blood parameters.

Haemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body. Measuring its level helps detect anaemia and assess oxygen delivery to tissues. Low haemoglobin can cause fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath.

Haematocrit measures the proportion of red blood cells in your blood. It provides important information about blood volume and can indicate dehydration, anaemia, or polycythaemia (too many red cells).

Red cell count quantifies the number of red blood cells in your blood. This helps evaluate your blood's capacity to transport oxygen and detect blood disorders such as anaemia or polycythaemia.

Mean Corpuscular Volume indicates the average size of your red blood cells. It helps classify anaemia types—high MCV suggests B12 or folate deficiency, while low MCV suggests iron deficiency.

Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin measures the average amount of haemoglobin per red blood cell. It provides insight into red cell oxygen-carrying capacity and helps diagnose different types of anaemia.

Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration reflects the concentration of haemoglobin in red blood cells. It helps identify types of anaemia and red cell abnormalities such as spherocytosis.

Red Cell Distribution Width measures the variation in red blood cell size. Increased RDW can indicate nutritional deficiencies, bone marrow disorders, or mixed anaemia types.

White cell count measures the total number of white blood cells in your blood. These cells are vital for fighting infections and maintaining immune health. Abnormal levels may indicate infection, inflammation, or immune disorders.

Neutrophils are the most common type of white blood cell, responsible for combating bacterial infections. Their levels indicate immune response and inflammation. Low neutrophils can increase infection risk.

Lymphocytes play a key role in the immune system, including antibody production and viral defence. Their count helps assess immune function and can indicate viral infections or immune disorders.

Monocytes are white blood cells that help remove dead cells and fight infections. Their levels can indicate inflammation, chronic infection, or immune system activity.

Eosinophils are involved in allergic reactions and fighting parasitic infections. Their count helps identify allergies, asthma, and certain immune disorders.

Basophils are the least common white blood cells and play a role in inflammatory responses. They release histamine during allergic reactions and help protect against parasites.

Platelet count measures the number of platelets in your blood, which are essential for clot formation. Maintaining a healthy platelet level is vital to prevent excessive bleeding or clotting disorders.

Mean Platelet Volume indicates the average size of your platelets. Larger platelets are generally younger and more active, providing insight into platelet production and bone marrow function.

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube. A high ESR indicates inflammation in the body and can help monitor inflammatory conditions or infections.

Serum iron measures the amount of iron circulating in your blood. Iron is essential for haemoglobin production and oxygen transport. Low iron can cause iron deficiency anaemia, while high iron may indicate iron overload.

Total Iron Binding Capacity measures your blood's capacity to bind and transport iron. High TIBC typically indicates iron deficiency, while low TIBC may suggest iron overload or chronic disease.

Ferritin reflects the amount of stored iron in your body. It is a key indicator of iron deficiency or overload, helping to diagnose anaemia or conditions like haemochromatosis. Low ferritin is often the first sign of depleting iron stores.

Active vitamin B12 measures the biologically available form of vitamin B12 in your blood. It is crucial for nerve function, red blood cell production, and DNA synthesis. Deficiency can cause fatigue, neurological problems, and megaloblastic anaemia.

Red cell folate measures your long-term folate (vitamin B9) status by assessing folate stored in red blood cells. It is essential for DNA synthesis and red blood cell formation. Low folate can cause megaloblastic anaemia and is especially important during pregnancy.
